Can acupuncture help allergies?

Updated: Aug 28, 2018

An allergy is an exaggerated immune response to a normally harmless substance such as: pollens, food, dust and many other substances. For most people these substances pose no problem, but in an allergic individual, the immune system identifies these substances as a threat and produces an inappropriate response. Over 50 million people in North America suffer from allergies.

Most commonly they experience: nasal congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing, hives, stuffy or runny nose, and/or sore throats. These symptoms are similar to the common cold or the flu, but the difference is that environmental allergies are generally seasonal. Asthma is also related to allergies in many cases. The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylactic shock. It can be life-threatening as it causes swelling of the throat making it difficult to breath. The most common allergy related to anaphylactic shock would be a peanut allergy. When someone with this allergy is exposed to peanuts some have minutes, or only seconds to get a dose of epinephrine (the drug that suppresses the allergic reaction), giving them a bit of time to get to hospital to be treated further.

How can acupuncture help allergies? This ancient Chinese procedure has been used to treat multiple allergy symptoms from sneezing to itchy eyes. During a session, acupuncture practitioners would place these hair-thin needles under the skin in meridians. Meridians are energy channels that run throughout our bodies. When someone is suffering from an allergy or condition this indicates that there is an energy block in a certain meridian disturbing the flow of energy. Using these tiny needles we can help restore the natural flow of energy, ultimately relieving your symptoms. With allergies it is common to see improvement after the first treatment. For more chronic allergies you may need to seek around more treatments before getting great everlasting results.
